Italian Serie A capital club AS Roma are hopeful of sealing a £20m deal for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling according to the Daily Star.

It was said that the Red Devils will use the Chris Smalling transfer fee for the signing of a new centre back rather than use it for Jadon Sancho, their top priority in the present transfer market.

The Borussia Dortmund player is the first name on the list of transfer targets at Manchester United and they have to pay at least £108m for him to sign him.

On Chris Smalling, AS Roma are determined to sign the England international between now and next month when the transfer market will end.

The Daily Star confirmed that the Italians had a £15m bid turned down for Chris Smalling with Manchester United holding out for £25m.

With the Red Devils keen to offload Chris Smalling, AS Roma believe they can sign the 31-year-old for a lesser fee of around £20m towards the latter stages of the current transfer window.

Chris Smalling impressed during his loan spell at AS Roma last season and manager Pablo Fonseca wants him back. He scored three goals plus two assists in 37 appearances.

Manchester United will use the Chris Smalling funds for a new central defender with RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano, Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and Inter Milan player Milan Skriniar high on their list.
