Manchester United have been recommended England captain Harry Kane as an alternative to Erling Braut Haaland if the club cannot sign the Borussia Dortmund centre-forward.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is an admirer of Erling’s abilities and managed his fellow countryman at Molde. Since then, the 20-year-old’s market price has shot up after goal-rich stints with Red Bull Salzburg and Dortmund.

In Germany, Erling has managed 38 goals and nine assists in just 40 games despite his age, including eight in just six UCL outings.

The Red Devils and Chelsea are both keeping tabs on him with the view to potentially landing the frontman this summer or in 2022 when a release clause in his deal makes him available for less than £70 million.

But Arsenal icon and Chelsea fan Paul Merson thinks it is the west London heavyweights who need Haaland most.

The Red Devils also want a new striker with summer acquisition Edinson Cavani, who joined on a free from the French giants Paris Saint-Germain, turning 34 tomorrow.

Yet Merson thinks Tottenham captain Harry Kane should be on the Old Trafford side’s wishlist, with the 27-year-old star having repeatedly made it clear he wants to win silverware.

Paul wrote in the Daily Star: “Manchester United should also be in for him [Haaland]. Edinson Cavani has done great there but he isn’t the future of Manchester United.

“If they went and got Haaland it would take them to another level. But do they go for Harry Kane instead?

“Kane isn’t going to Chelsea. No chance. But he might go to United. And that would leave Chelsea to go for Haaland.”
