Mason Greenwood impressed in the last campaign for Manchester United under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
However, this season, he has warmed the bench more often than not. He needs to start regularly to have any hope of getting selected for the Euros but in my view, he should forget about the European Championships and must focus on the next year’s World Cup.
Last term, he started the last 8 league games and helped his team earn a place in the top four. This time around, the teenage attacker has only started 9 times in the PL and has completed 90 minutes just once.
It must be taken into consideration that back in September 2020, after making his senior international debut, he was expelled from the squad for breaking COVID-19 protocols.
Moreover, the competition for attacking positions in the England international squad is very high and without starting regularly, it is highly unlikely that Southgate will select him for the Euros.
On the other hand, to earn a place in the World Cup, I think that Greenwood should leave Man United in the summer transfer window. You’ll know your odds of winning a World Cup once the qualification process is complete but reigning champions France are probably the favorites to retain the title.
The Red Devils need to sign a top right winger in the summer. They failed to lure Sancho and it is likely that they will sign someone for that role who will eventually start ahead of Greenwood.
In such a scenario, the 19-year-old would get even lesser game time next season and therefore, staying at Old Trafford will decrease his chances of wearing the Three Lions shirt, should England end up booking a place in Qatar.
He did score a fantastic goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup at the weekend but it will not come as any surprise to see him start on the bench vs Sheffield tomorrow night.
Have your say – Should Mason Greenwood look to leave Man United to play week in week out?
