Manchester United target Danny Ings rejects four year contract offer at Southampton

According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Southampton star Danny Ings this summer.

The English striker has rebuilt his career since joining Southampton in 2018. He has since emerged as the Saints frontline striker, scoring 46 goals and making 10 assists in 100 games.

Despite ending the season with 12 goals in the Premier League, Ings missed out on the England squad for the Euros. With just a year to go on his current deal at St Mary’s, he faces a pivotal summer.

Ings has now thrown his future open for speculation by rejecting Southampton’s contract offer. According to the report, accepting the terms would have made him the highest-paid player in the club’s history. With both United and Tottenham Hotspur interested, it could be a hint that he is keen on securing a move to greener pastures.

The 28-year-old has previously turned out for Liverpool. However, he was blighted by injuries during his time at Anfield, making just 25 appearances across four seasons. Southampton are not thrilled about losing him on a free next summer. It remains to be seen if he will be tempted to sign on if the Saints include a release clause.

Despite Edinson Cavani penning fresh terms, United could do with another striker in their ranks. Ings will not cost a king’s ransom and could be available for a knockdown price. More so, it could prove to be his last opportunity to move to a top-tier club.

A proven striker in the Premier League, he is someone United could make use of from the word go. It could very well prove to be an astute purchase. Whether that proves to be the case remains to be seen.

While he is not the most glamorous name out there, Ings is a steady player who has much to offer. He was crowned Southampton’s Fans Player of the Year for 2019/20.
