Italian journalist Vito Angele has reported that Manchester United are frontrunners to land LOSC Lille star midfielder Boubakary Soumare.
He has caught the eyes of several elite clubs. Chelsea and Manchester United were strongly linked with the Frenchman in the summer after he inspired Les Dogues an impressive fourth-place finish in Ligue 1 last term.
While Chelsea failed to table an offer for the Lille midfielder, the Red Devils opted to sign Ajax star Donny van de Beek instead.
On the Italian Football Podcast, Vito stated that Manchester United are now back in for the player and currently lead the hunt for his signature.
“He is an important player but I don’t think he will be coming to Serie A. Manchester United are working on him and they are the favourites to sign him right now. Lille are also asking a high price for him which is too much for Milan.”
They are looking to bolster their midfield ranks and see Soumare as a potential replacement for the Serbian star Nemanja Matic, who is in his career’s twilight.
It’d be interesting to see if the Old Trafford club meet Lille’s valuation, as the Ligue 1 outfit have allegedly slapped a €35 million price tag on him.
Soumare moved to Stade Pierre Mauroy from Paris Saint-Germain for free three years ago but struggled to break into the Les Dogues team in his first two seasons.
The 21-year-old midfielder eventually broke into the senior team in the 2019-20 season and since then has established himself as one of the most in-demand midfielders across the continent.
