Manchester United could reportedly retain their long-term interest in Nikola Milenkovic with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen on signing a new centre-back ahead of next season.
The Serbia international was closely watched by the Red Devils under former boss Jose Mourinho but Fiorentina’s £54m asking price put them off from making a formal approach.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Solskjaer has expressed the desire to sign another centre-back during the summer and Milenkovic is one of the high-profile targets for the club.
The 22-year-old, who has also been tracked by the likes of Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Inter Milan, could be available for a reduced fee of around £40m with his contract scheduled to expire in two years’ time.
Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have been the constant choices under Solskjaer at the heart of the defence but Solskjaer seems keen on adding competition for places.
Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe have impressed with the limited opportunities in the current campaign but the duo have had injury problems over the past few seasons.
