Manchester United are targeting a swoop for Jonny Evans on a free transfer from the Premier League rivals Leicester City, according to reports.

Louis van Gaal allowed Jonny, who had initially made his debut under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2007, to leave United for West Bromwich Albion in a £6 million deal back in 2015.

The 32-year-old star has impressed since his departure from the Red Devils and has been one of Brendan Rodgers’ key players at Leicester City.

But Evans’ current deal is due to expires at the end of the season and the centre-half has not yet reached a fresh agreement with the Foxes.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils’ team who are involved in transfers have shortlisted Jonny as a potential signing and are keeping a close eye on the Northern Ireland international’s situation.

The report states that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to strengthen his defensive options but has just £20 million to spend in the upcoming January transfer window.

It’s also stated that both Solskjaer and his assistant Mike Phelan are big admirers of the Englishman’s ability.

‘Johnny’s name has come up in conversation. There are still a lot of people here who have plenty of time for him – and that includes Ole and Mike Phelan.’ a source at Old Trafford told The Sun.

Jonny, who has played in six league matches for Leicester this term, made 131 Prem appearances for the 20-times English champions.

And the Belfast-born player and his Leicester team-mates will take on Fulham in their tenth top-flight match this term.
