Manchester United have been given a boost in their long-running pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star Dan-Axel Zagadou, according to a recent report.

The 22-year-old towering defender has endured an injury-hit season in Bundesliga so far, being restricted to only five division starts this season.

As a result of the player’s persistent injury problems, Inside Futbol are stating that BVB have doubts over the idea of handing the Frenchman a contract extension, whose existing deal expires at the end of the campaign.

Therefore, a possible move for the centre-half by the Red Devils becomes an attractive option, with Die Borussen man being available to transfer to Old Trafford for nothing this summer.

A move for the player is similar to the potential transfer being eyed up for Chelsea’s contract rebel Antonio Rudiger, with Ralf Rangnick’s side being linked with the player ahead of a free transfer this summer as well.

Dan-Axel’s latest appearance came in the club’s 6-0 hammering of Adi Hutter’s Borussia Monchengladbach, in which the youngster was forced off before half time because of the latest of this campaign’s injury issues.

Elsewhere, Anthony Elanga has broken a UEFA Champions League club record for his team following his equaliser versus Atletico Madrid.

He has become the youngest player in United’s history to net in the knockout stages of the UCL at 19 years and 302 days old.
