Latest reports have linked Dalot with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, where he could link up with former United boss and fellow countryman Jose Mourinho.
So it’s clear the Portuguese youngster has a decision to make on his future after a frustrating season.
There’s no doubting the identity of United’s first-choice right-back. Since his summer arrival, it has been Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and the former Crystal Palace star is virtually peerless in the Premier League, never mind at United, leaving Dalot in the shade.
Dalot was signed by United during Mourinho’s time in charge of the Red Devils, and the 21-year-old defender was heralded by his compatriot at the time of his arrival in Manchester.
Indeed, Mourinho said that Dalot had “all the attributes” to be a top defender in the Premier League and that the then 19-year-old was, in his opinion, the best European full-back in his age group.
Mourinho said: “Diogo is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club.
“He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.
“In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”
Dalot has played just 66 minutes in the Premier League this season and while that’s a shame for a player of his ability and age – still only 21 – he will feel he can be a regular at another club.
