Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bring in RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano once Manchester United finalise a deal for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, according to the latest reports.

The club have now agreed a £40.3 million deal with the Dutch side for the 23-year-old and a move could be finalised this week.

The Red Devils also remain intent on landing Jadon Sancho, however they have still been unable to agree a transfer sum with Borussia Dortmund.

Ole is also looking to bolster his defensive variants ahead of the new season and according to ESPN, the United boss is pushing to sign Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

The report claims that Ole is ‘prioritising’ a new central defender to play alongside club captain Harry Maguire, while the Old Trafford outfit believe an agreement can be reached with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig before the transfer deadline on October 5.

In July, Dayot signed a new contract with RB Leipzig which keeps the player tied to the club until 2023.

However, reports in Germany state that the 21-year-old’s fresh deal includes a €42m (£37.6m) release clause which will be active from next year.

United, meanwhile, are open to offloading Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling before the end of the transfer window.

ESPN also claims that Solskjaer is also ‘concerned’ by the reliability of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof, which is why he is keen to recruit a new centre-back for the 20-times English champions this summer.
