Sergio Ramos could replicate the impact Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani has had at Old Trafford but in defence, reckons ex-Premier League shot-stopper, Shaka Hislop.

He has long been linked to the Red Devils and with his future at the Bernabeu uncertain, again finds himself tipped to sign for United this summer when he stands to be a free agent.

Sergio will be available for nothing in the summer and he can already talk to overseas sides about a free transfer, but the Los Blancos defender has an offer on the table to stay on at the club, where Ramos has won five La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions Leagues.

He is said to earn in excess of £300,000 per week at Real Madrid and United are one of the few teams who could pay him a similar salary, with Mauricio Pochettino’s Paris Saint-Germain another interested club.

United’s defence has come in for criticism this campaign having conceded 30 goals in 23 top-flight games, the most of any side in the top nine. League leaders Manchester City, the only club above United, have conceded just 14 times in 22 matches.

Considering the impact 33-year-old Cavani has had at Old Trafford, having scored seven goals since signing on a free from Paris Saint-Germain last year and giving the team more of a focal point when Edinson plays, Hislop has championed the signing of Sergio believing he could transform the defence in a similar vein.

“Yeah why not? I’ll tell you what, I’m hugely impressed with Cavani,” Shaka told ESPN FC.

“I didn’t think Cavani would be as good or as impactful as he has been. Sergio Ramos coming in at the other end of the pitch could probably have a similar effect.”
