The last story we covered in regards to Thiago came back on September 8th, from the usually excellent Fabrizio Romano. He stated that contact had been made with the Spaniard’s representatives.
Now, journalist Richard Marrow has taken to Twitter to share some breaking news. Apparently, a United transfer for the star 29-year-old is ‘now more likely than ever before’. Furthermore, an agreement on transfer fee and agents fees is ‘close’. Personal terms would still need to be worked out, though Marrow states that is the ‘easiest hurdle’ to get by.
Here at Old Trafford Faithful, we’ve been taking this rumour with a pinch of salt. After all, Liverpool have always felt like the frontrunners for Thiago’s signature. However, the fact that a deal hasn’t been done has left the door open for the 20-time Premier League champions…
It begs an obvious question. Where would Thiago fit in? After all, United have just signed Donny van de Beek, who already leaves us somewhat crowded in the midfield when everyone is fit.
The only reason I see a move for Thiago being viable is if someone is leaving. There have been whispers about Fred’s future at Old Trafford, but honestly, I don’t see the Brazilian going anywhere.
My only other thought is that United are struggling with other targets. Signing Thiago would ease fan furore somewhat, though I’d still much prefer to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer add a defender and a winger to this squad first.
Granted, that’s easier said than done and United adding a player with the quality of Thiago Alcantara should never be sniffed at. I just feel as if there are more pressing matters within that dressing room right now…
