Liverpool have reportedly already made informal contact with Sporting Lisbon forward Pedro Goncalves over a possible deal.

The 22-year-old who has been linked with a switch to Manchester United has been in scintillating form for the Primeira Liga giants this season.

He leads the way in the top scorer charts with 14 goals – six more than closest challengers Mehdi Taremi and Sergio Oliveira.

The Merseyside Reds have struggled to find the back of the net on their own patch recently despite boasting the formidable attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Firmino.

Jurgen Klopp is supposedly looking to strengthen his options up top in the summer.

According to Record, the Mersyeside Reds touched base with the Portuguese heavyweights last month over a deal, and Goncalves remains firmly on the radar of the Premier League champions.

However, the report claims that the prolific forward will not be departing on the cheap, as he possesses a €60m (£52.6m) release clause in his current deal at Sporting contract and both Liverpool and Man Utd have to break the bank in order to secure his services.

The Merseyside Reds reluctance to splash the cash in the transfer market was recently criticised by ex-manager Graeme Souness after they were thrashed 4-1 by the Citizens on Sunday evening while Man Utd finished game 3-3 against Everton.
