Manchester United scouts are reportedly still keeping a close eye on Sporting CP defender Nuno Mendes, who is coveted by a host of Europe’s elite clubs.
United were on the observation post for a new left-back last summer and were briefly linked with the 18-year-old ace, only to end up choosing to land Brazilian Alex Telles from Porto in a deal worth around £15 million instead.
However, in spite of just bolstering their left-back spot, O Jogo report that United are still monitoring Nuno and want to ensure they know exactly what is going on with the youngster’s career.
An imminent transfer isn’t on the cards, with the teen currently close to extending his deal with Sporting, but United see him as a possible option for the future if they find themselves needing to replace one of Alex or the England international Luke Shaw.
The club are not alone in their pursuit of him. Real Madrid, Liverpool, Inter, AC Milan and Juventus are all named as potential suitors for a player who is widely seen as one of the most exciting young full-backs in Europe.
If the red Devils really are continuing to look at new, gifted left-backs, it seems like bad news for 20-year-old Englishman Brandon Williams.
Seen as United’s future in the position last term, Williams has managed just six minutes of action in the top-flight this season, with Alex’s arrival seeing him tumble well down the pecking order at United.
