Manchester United are allegedly ready to pay as much as £90m for the transfer of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman is one of the finest defenders in Europe and has long been a key part of Los Blancos, so it’s hard to imagine him departing any time soon.

Don Balon link Manchester United with a strong interest in Varane, with the club understood to be willing to pay £90m for him, though it seems even that will not persuade Real to let him go, according to the report.

This follows United being linked with a possible interest in the player by The Athletic in a recent report, which noted the club’s need to bolster the defence, with Dayot Upamecano also mentioned as a possible addition.

With Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof all struggling in United’s defence in recent times, it seems clear a change is necessary, and Varane could be a big upgrade.

The 27-year-old star has won the World Cup with France as well as four UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga titles at club level, so he would bring plenty of experience and winning know-how to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s roster, which has been short of silverware for some time now.

In the meantime, Bayern Munich chief Hasan Salihamidzic has denied that Manchester United made contact with the Bundesliga side over the summer to discuss Kingsley Coman.

“There was nothing, and we wouldn’t have looked into it either,” the Bayern sporting director told Bild.

“His goal in the Champions League final should explain enough why we are relying on him wholeheartedly.”
