Manchester United are reportedly pressing ahead with a swoop for Villarreal defender Pau Torres after having a £50 million offer rejected by Real Madrid for Raphael Varane.

The 28-year-old was identified as the Red Devils’ top defensive target by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier in 2021 after the Frenchman informed Los Blancos that he would not be penning an extension to his existing contract, which expires in 2022.

The La Liga side are therefore minded to sell the player but United have had a £50 million offer rejected for the defender, with the Galacticos holding out for closer to £80 million.

United have a host of departments in which they are keen to invest this summer and signing Raphael for around £80 million would mean Ole using over half of his £75 million budget.

The Manchester Evening News, therefore, claim that United have now stepped up their pursuit of Pau, who has an exit clause of £51 million in his contract.

He was on the club’s shortlist before he put in a Man of the Match performance in his side’s Europa League final win against the Red Devils at the end of last campaign and United think he could work well with Harry Maguire at the back.
