Manchester United opted to loan out Chris Smalling last summer and the English central defender regularly played for Roma in the last campaign.

As per the latest reports going on in the media, the Red Devils could offload the veteran star on permanent basis this summer.

Fabrizio Romano claims that Smalling wants to come back to the Italian capital and the Red Devils are close to reaching an agreement to sell him to the Giallorossi.

Another Italian journalist in the form of Nicolo Schira claimed that the 30-year-old defender has already agreed a three year contract worth 9 million euros (£8million) with Roma and Man Utd are in advanced talks to sell him for 18-20 million euros (£16-£18million).

Smalling featured in 30 Serie A fixtures for the Italian giants last term, scored 3 goals and also provided 2 assists. Roma finished 5th in the table and will not be taking part in the UEFA Champions League next season.

Under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson, the former Fulham center back was a key member of the squad and helped us win two Premier League titles.

Smalling has played more than 300 games for United, won every major domestic prize and also won the Europa League. He has been a great servant but it is time for him to leave the club. His services are not needed because central defenders like Maguire, Lindelof, Bailly and even Jones are ahead of him in the pecking order.

Smalling’s current contract with Man Utd will expire in 2022 and he will turn 31 in November. So, it would be great if we can get a fee of around £16-£18million from his sale.
