Red Devils can sign Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo if they meet his €60m release clause this summer, reports say. Wales international has been earmarked as a main target should Man United miss out on a transfer deal for Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho. But he won’t come cheap, with the fee huge for a player of his years.
Man United are monitoring Rabbi, who has impressed for Schalke when played this campaign. They reportedly view him as a ‘cost-efficient’ option and see him as being in the same ‘low-risk buy’ bracket to Daniel James, who arrived from Swansea nearly a year ago.
Red Devils perfect addition stays England international Jadon Sancho, who has been in blistering form for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga this campaign. But Matondo is very much of interest and would cost close to £54m if the club were to try and bring him to Theatre of Dreams.
The 19-year-old winger could be cut loose by Schalke, who are expected to sell first-team footballers at the end of the campaign. Even though the release clause is relatively high for a player who has played only 13 matches this campaign, scoring once, Man United deems him a bargain buy.
Yet it appears Red Devils will only go after Matondo if Jadon proves to be beyond their reach. Sancho won’t come cheap, with the Bundesliga giants determined to get a fee of over £100m for their star asset. Usually Red Devils would have no problem paying that, with the club well-off financially even amid the covid crisis.
