Ex-Manchester United boss Rene Meulensteen says his former club should be targeting an elite centre-forward like Harry Kane.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has entrusted the France international Anthony Martial with the No.9 role at the club and the Frenchman rewarded his boss with 17 top-flight goals last term.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former senior team coach Rene believes there are a host of areas of the squad that need addressing in the transfer market and a traditional striker such as Spurs’ Harry Kane should be the priority.

Meulensteen told talkSPORT: ‘ ‘They’re bringing Jadon Sancho in, but more than anything, I would have gone for a more prolific out-and-out striker, somebody like Harry Kane.

‘There is so much creativity coming from midfield with [Bruno] Fernandes, [Paul] Pogba, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial… they can all contribute to goalscoring.

‘But [they need] somebody in the middle who’s going to score 25-plus goals. That will close the gap for United.’

In other news, Everton are reportedly keen on signing Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot this transfer window.

The 21-year-old has only made 11 appearances for the club during the 2019-20 campaign, while he has featured on just one occasion for United since the lockdown period.

Having been left out of the roster that faced LASK Linz in the UEFA Europa League on Wednesday night, the speculation surrounding his long-term future has gathered pace.

According to The Mirror, Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is keen to bring the Portugal youth international to Goodison Park during this summer’s transfer market.

The report adds that the Toffees manager is seeking a long-term replacement for Seamus Coleman and thinks that Dalot could be signed for £10 million ahead of next season.

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have also recently been touted with an interest in the former Porto ace.
